What To Do During The December Lull

Red Christmas OrnamentIt happens every year just after Thanksgiving.  Business grinds to a halt.  Nobody, it seems, can keep their mind on their work.  This is the time of year when executives, also known as quantity buyers, take extended vacations – sometimes without leaving their office!

In fact, this is the month when it can be difficult to do business with anyone. Either they aren’t available (probably because they’re at the office Christmas party!), or they can’t buy anything until after the holiday (you can make up any reason you want.  I’ve heard them all!).

But, just because everyone else is busy dreaming of sugarplums that doesn’t mean that you need to hang it up until after the first of the year.  In fact, this is the time for you to really crank things up and get moving.  Now is your chance to work on those things that you’ve had to set aside or put off because you were so busy making sales.

This is the time for you to reflect over the past year.  Look at how far you’ve come and how much you’ve accomplished.  Take an honest assessment of where your business is.  What went well?  What didn’t?  How can you make things better for next year?  What do you want to accomplish in the next 12 months and what is it going to take for you to get there?  Set some new goals for your business.

This is also a good time for you to complete a few projects.  Maybe you’ll start a new booklet and get it done so that you can offer it to your market in January.  Or maybe you’ve got a booklet that needs to be finished.  Maybe it’s a new blog or website project that you’ve had to put off.  Or maybe you’ve finally decided where you want your home office to be and now you just need a little furniture.

Of course, you do still want to be working on your sales.  And, even if the execs aren’t around much this time of year you can still sell to your general market.  After all, booklets make great stocking stuffers!

So grab your hot toddy, your wassail or your latte, roll up your sleeves and get to work!  The clock is still ticking – yes, even in December.   What you get done today will be another step forward toward growing your business and creating the life you want!
