Turning Up The Heat – 3 Simple Tips To Help You Move Forward Fast

As our theme for this month comes to a close there are three simple tips I would like to give to you that will help you move forward fast.

1)  Focus on the long term.  Everything you do should be helping you move closer toward your goals for your business and yourself.  Sometimes you can get lost in the daily grind of doing business and lose your focus.  When that happens remind yourself of why you’re doing what you’re doing.  Remember, you are in business for one reason only – to make money!

2)  Cut anything in your way.  If something is standing between you and your goals, get rid of it or get someone else to deal with it.  It might be a vendor who never gets their work done on time, or it might be the naysayers in your life, or it might even be your own thoughts about what you can accomplish.  Get new vendors, tell the naysayers to shut up, and start thinking positive!  Whatever is in your way, either fix it or get rid of it.

3)  Grab as many opportunities as you can.  You may not be able to grab every opportunity.  Life and business are full of them.  But, take advantage of as many as you can.  You know the old saying – opportunity doesn’t knock twice.  Or at least, the same opportunity usually doesn’t.  If it’s good for you and your business, do it.

Turning Up The Heat – How To Become A Household Name

Have you ever thought about why you shop with one particular company, or why you buy one particular brand over another?  What makes Nike or Starbucks so special?

Starbucks Does Coffee

What do you think of when you think of Starbucks?  The first word that probably comes to your mind is coffee.  Starbucks does coffee.  And, not only does starbucks do coffee, they do it like nobody else.  Sure, Starbucks now offers a few other items – but they all go quite well with coffee, even the sandwiches.

Of course, you can order tea at Starbucks, or hot chocolate or several other drinks to your liking.  But, Starbucks is never thought of as a tea house or a higher level fast food restaurant that offers gourmet style shakes.  Starbucks is known for it’s coffee -period.

Nike And Levi

Just as there is one word associated with Starbucks, there is also one word associated with Nike.  Can you guess what it is?  You might be thinking shoes, but you would be closer if you said tennis shoes.  Nike is known for their tennis shoes, regardless of what other type of shoe or clothing they might manufacture.

How about Levi?  What do you think of when you hear that word?  Levi became so known for their blue jeans that there was a time when all jeans were called Levis, whether or not they were the Levi brand.  Today the Levi company creates denim jackets, blouses, and other clothing items, but their jeans are still their best selling product and what they are best known for.

Becoming A Household Name

So, how does all this relate to you as a publisher of booklets?  Each company mentioned above specialized in ONE product and did it well.  That specialization is what made each company a household name.

If you really want to turn the heat up on your business, you should specialize.  Think about what you want to be known for.  What is your area of expertise?  If it’s gardening, that’s a start.  You, as an author, and your publishing company might become the household name for booklets and other products having to do with gardening.  If you can make it even more specific, such as growing roses, that’s even better.

Specializing in one particular area tells your market what you do, and that you do it very well.  It adds value to your business.  And just like Starbucks, Nike and the Levi company, once you are known for that one thing in which you specialize, you can branch out from there and add other products to your line – as long as they are in sync with what you specialize in.  You won’t find Levi’s coffee anywhere nor Starbuck’s jeans.

Turning Up The Heat – The Greatest Investment You Can Ever Make In Your Booklet Business

The greatest investment you can ever make in your booklet business is to invest in your education.  This doesn’t mean you need to go out and get a college degree or go to business school.  It means that you are willing to learn what you need to know in order to grow your business.

Everything that happens in between the writing of your booklet and the sale of that booklet is the nuts and bolts of your business.  Some of these things you can figure out on your own.  But, others will mystify you, dumbfound you, and leave you feeling like you’re alone in the corner of a dark, empty room.  It’s those things that seem to block your path that you need to watch for and find a way to circumvent.

There is nothing you can’t handle in your booklet adventure as long as you are willing to learn new things.  Look at where you are and where you want to be, and ask yourself how you can conduct business better in order to get you there faster.  Keep learning and your business will keep growing!

Turning Up The Heat – The Single, Most Destructive Thing You Can Do In Your Business

We all have 24 hours in a day.  About a third of that time is spent sleeping.  What do we do with the rest of our time?

If you really want to be successful in your booklet adventure, it’s important that you are continually busy working toward your goals.  That means you never waste a single moment.  Take advantage of every opportunity you have, every moment of every day that you have set aside for your business.

If you’re sitting idly by, doing something other than working during your work time, you are not accomplishing anything.  You’re wasting time.  Time is precious.  It is our most valuable asset.  Used properly, time will move us toward our goals.  Used improperly it will move us away from them.

Imagine that you have some time to spend with your child or grandchild.  Would you focus on them, giving them your undivided attention?  Or, would you spend that time on your cell phone, your computer, or doing other things that render you unavailable to that child?  You MUST treat your business hours with same kind of respect as you would that child or grandchild.

Wasting time is probably the single, most destructive thing you can do in your business.  Seize every moment and make it count!

You may have admired the success of others, but have you ever given any thought as to why they are successful?  How did Oprah become the biggest talk show host of all time?  How did J.K. Rowling become such successful author?  How did Donald Trump become such a real estate tycoon?  These people have all had incredible obstacles to over come, but one thing kept them going when the going seemed impossible – They had real, attainable goals and they linked everything they did to those goals.  This is the magic formula for superstar success.

Small, Realistic Goals Add Up

Nobody starts a business and expects to go from start-up to a large conglomeration within a year.  Most people who start a business think in small terms – bite size dreams and goals that are realistic to attain.  For the author, this means the focus is narrowed to one book or booklet.  There might be (and indeed there should be) a daydream here or there beyond it, and that’s healthy, but a large business begins with one product, followed by another and then another.  Each one is a goal in and of itself, and each one furthers you toward other goals – goals of increase in business and in revenue.

Building Momentum

When you are working toward a short term goal, it fuels your sense of achievement, builds momentum and makes it easy to link your current activities to your goal.  A good short term goal is one that seems very realistic and within reach. 

Link everything you do to your current, short term goal, and when you achieve it move on to the next short term goal and link everything you do to that one.  When you focus all of your activity on one goal, you’ll achieve it sooner and your business will coast toward the success you want!

Turning Up The Heat – The ONE Thing You Must Do To Get The Results You Want

Now that you know what you REALLY want for yourself and your business (and if you don’t you need to go back and read my previous post), it’s time to move forward and Start getting the results you desire!

The One Thing That Gets Results

Everyone wants to be successful, but not everyone is willing to do what it takes.  The vast majority of humanity would rather wish and dream than do.  And that doing is the key to success.  Only actions will bring you the results you desire.  There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE that can create success for you.  Wishes and dreams are a beginning, but they are NOT the means to the end result.

So, now that you know what you want, you need to determine the actions you need to take in order to get there.  How?  By starting at the end and working backward.  Look at where you want to be in your business and in your life twenty years from now.  It may be difficult for you to imagine actually achieving that level of success, but unless you’re dreaming of something that is truly impossible, you can get there.

Next, look at where you want to be ten years from now and ask yourself if that goal will help you get to your twenty year goal.  It should.  If it doesn’t seem to fit, tweak it.

Now look at your five year goal and ask yourself if that will help you get to your ten year goal.  And then, look at your one year goal and see if that fits with your five year goal.  What you should see in each goal is a certain level of growth that will help you reach your next goal.

Keep It Flexible

Of course, goals can change along the way.  Nothing should ever be ridgid or set in stone.  If your goals don’t need some tweaking now, they will at a later date.  Sometimes opportunities come up that you never could have imagined and goals need to be tweaked in order to take advantage of them.  Other times, something doesn’t go the way you thought it would, and you’ll find you need to change your goal because of that.  Your goals should be flexible.

What You Must Focus On Now

The most important of your goals is your one year goal.  This is the one you really want to focus on because it is responsible for getting you to your five years ,which in turn is responsible for getting you to your ten year goal and so on.  Look at your one year goal and ask yourself what it’s going to take to get you there.

If your one year goal is simply to be the author of a booklet that is selling, that’s an easy goal to achieve.  You can write your booklet in as little as 24 hours if you’re truly dedicated, or if you have other time constraints it might take you a week or two.  In any case, the writing and production of your booklet won’t take long, and in just a month or two you’ll have a finished booklet ready for your market.  In that case, you’ll want to work on the sales aspect of your goal.

If, on the other hand, your goal is to expand your business and your income, you’ll want to be specific as to how much you wish to expand and what you’ll need to do in order to achive this goal.  If you would like to double your income, you’ll need to consider the products you already have on the market, which ones are your best sellers, and what new products would compliment them that your market will snap up.

These are just a couple of simple examples to get you started.  The bottom line is that without action you can’t get anywhere.  Your dreams and goals will never be achieved.  Action is the one thing, and the ONLY thing, that can get you the results you want.  Start taking action now!

Turning Up The Heat – How To Figure Out What You REALLY Want

Have you ever thought about growing your business to new levels but you’re not sure where to begin or how to do it?  This month we’re going to fill in the blanks, and it all begins with knowing what you really want.

Look At The Lifestyle, Not Just The Results

Have you ever heard someone say, ” I wish I had…….” or “I wish I could…….”  Most people like to wish rather than take action.  Sometimes they do it because they are lazy and don’t want to do what it takes to have something better than what they have now.  But, often the problem isn’t lazieness.  It’s that they haven’t given any thought to what THEY really want.

It’s easy to look at someone else’s lifestyle and wish for a moment that their lifestyle was your lifestyle.  But often, someone else’s lifestyle isn’t really what you want.  You want their level of income, or success, or credibility, but these things are not a lifestyle in and of themselves.  Rather, they are the result of a lifestyle – usually one of dedication and hard work.

What Are You Focused On?

Society today is obsessed with celebrities.  We want what they have – the looks, the clothes, the house, the parties, the fun.  But, these people are some of the hardest working people on the planet.  Most of them put in very long hours, and some of them will spend days, weeks or months away from home and their families.  That is the reality of their lifestyle which the public never sees and never thinks about.  These people know what they want, and because of that, they are dedicated to what they do.

What about you?  Do you really know what you want, or are you just taking things one day at a time, going wherever the moment takes you?  If you’re new to booklets, you probably haven’t thought about what lies beyond your first title.  And if you’ve been in the business for a while, you’re probably focused on your current project.  It’s time to look ahead and think about what you really, really want.

How To Figure Out What You Want

So, where do you begin?  Start by thinking about where you would like to see your business and yourself a year from now.  Then, move to five years, ten years and twenty years.  Do you want a small business that you can continue to run from home?  Do you want a large, corporate type publishing company?    What kind of money would you like to be making from your booklets a year from now?  In five years?  Ten?  What kinds of customers will you attract?  Will they be corporate clients who buy from you in mass quantities?  Or will they be devoted fans who enjoy reading everything you publish?  And will you continue to only write booklets, or will you expand into other areas such as speaking and teaching?

Give some serious thought to your future today and what you REALLY want.  Imagine having what you think you want.  For example, if your goal is to build a corporate company and deal with corporate clients, imagine that is what you have.  Think about what your role in the company would be, and who you would deal with on a daily basis.  Think about going to that office every day.  It might make you feel excited, or it might make you feel exhausted.  Either way, you’ll gain some insight as to whether or not that lifestyle suits you and your business.

Cars, clothes, houses and money are NOT the lifestyle.  They are the results of alot of hard work and dedication.  That is the lifestyle.  But, if you’re happy with the work you’re doing and you enjoy it, you’ll be dedicated to it.
