New Beginnings – What To Focus On In 2011

A new year is filled with new beginnings, and that is our theme for January. Each of the posts on this blog for this month will have something to do with new beginnings, and today I want to talk with you about what to focus on as you begin this new year.

Where Do You Start?

At the beginning of this new year, you may be wondering how this year will be different or better than last year.  You want to grow your business and get ahead, but there’s so much to do.  Where do you start?  What should you do first?  What should you focus your time and energy on?

Wanting to move forward and not quite knowing where to start can be overwhelming as you think through all of the things you need to do.  This is true whether you’re just beginning your booklet adventure, or whether you’re a seasoned professional.  But, there is way to bring your vision into clear focus so that you can concentrate and make real progress.

Pare It Down

You don’t have to do everything at once.  All you need to do is focus on one or two things at a time, and maybe that’s all you’ll focus on for the entire year.  For example, if you’re just starting your booklet adventure, you may be thinking about things like sales and marketing, speaking engagements or teaching classes, distribution, and the day to day managing of your business.  That’s alot for anyone to have to think about.  Rather than looking at the big picture and trying to go from there, it’s better to pare it down to something you can really focus on and do.

Instead of looking at all of the things you will eventually need to do, pare it down and consider where you are right now. If you’re just starting out, then you’ve got to get your first booklet done.  Without something to sell, you don’t have a booklet business or publishing company, and you won’t have any income from that idea floating around in your head.

What To Do Today

The best way to figure out what to focus on is to consider where you are now and where you want to be a year from now.  What is your overall goal for this year?  It may be to start your product line if you’re new to the booklet arena, or it might be to add new products to your existing ones.  It may be to reach new customers or a new market, or it may be to add some new services to what you’re doing.  You might have more than one goal you want to achieve, and that’s ok, but try not to focus on more than two at a time. The idea is to make it easy to focus on something and get it done, and if you’re trying to focus on too many things at once nothing will get done.

Choose one or two main things TODAY that you will focus on for this year.  it might be something that will come to an end, such as creating that first booklet, or it might be something ongoing such as growing your customer base.  Whatever it is, make that your main focus and if you should reach your goal before year’s end, then you can choose something else to focus your time and energy on.

To your riches!
