Why There’s Always More To Write

Do you have an idea for a booklet but you’re worried that too much has been written about it already?  Or, maybe you’ve already written a series of booklets and you don’t think there is anything else for you to say about your subject – no more booklets to write.  No matter how much has been written about any subject, there is always more to write!

Why There Is More To Write About Your Subject Than You Think

Take a trip to the bookstore or the library and you’ll find anywhere from a handful of books on any given subject to a hundred or more.  The health and nutrition section alone contains at least hundreds of titles, and if you include everything ever writing under this heading – from books to articles – there are probably millions of pieces of information on the subject.

Why is there so much written about health and nutrition?  Because it pertains to everyone, but not all at the same time.  In other words, each book or smaller publication or article is niched to a specific group. One title may be written to women under 30 while another is for women over 40.

Another consideration is that health and nutrition is a very broad subject.  You can write about vitamin supplements, weight loss, detoxing the body, organic farming, infant nutrtion, and the list goes on and on.  With such a broad subject there is so much variety that you could never run out of booklets to create. Throw the different niches into the mix and there are more possibilities for booklets than any one person could write in a lifetime!

Chances are your subject is broader than you think it is.  Think in terms of niches, and think in terms of how many sub-categories there are within your subject. If you break it down, you’re likely to find that there is more material waiting to be created than you originally thought.

Ideas Are Everywhere

Sometimes writing another booklet, or even your first one, is just a matter of coming up with the right idea.  Ideas are everywhere.  Once in a while, they’ll pop right into your head without you even having to think about it.  You might be driving somewhere, or you might be in the shower.  Usually, it happens when you’re relaxed and not thinking about it.

But, what if you’re not getting any ideas?  Then, you just have to look at what’s around you.  If you’re interested in a particular subject, go to your local library or bookstore and see what else has been written about it. That’s a sure way to spark ideas, because you will have a reaction to what others have written.  That reaction can be the very basis for your booklet.

You can find ideas as you go through your day too.  You might be looking at a website and something will suddenly click for you.  Or you might be watching tv when it happens.  All you need to do is actively seek, and the idea will come. Keep your mind aware that you are looking for an idea, but don’t dwell on it too much.

Listen To Your Audience

Your audience will also give you ideas of what to create, and there is no better place to get them.  When you create what your audience wants, it’s like having the sales built in! Just listen to what people tell you – even if they haven’t purchased from you before.  If you’re getting requests again and again for some particular information – BINGO!  That’s your next title!

Probably every subject has more material that could be written about it than any one person could ever do in a lifetime – including your subject.  Widen your focus.  Look at the niches.  Look at the subcategories.  Look at the ideas all around you.  And listen to your audience. When you do, you’ll be able to create product after product, and your riches will grow!

To your riches!

Ten Key Decisions That Unlock The Door To Unlimited Profits For Booklet Authors

When you write and self publish a booklet, you don’t just become an author.  You become a business owner.  And owning a booklet business means owning a business with unlimited profit potential.  Why?  Because you are the one who makes all the decisions.  Here are the seven key decisions that you will make as the owner of a booklet business which will determine your financial future.

1)  You decide what to write. You have the opportunity to choose any topic you wish.  Nobody is dictating what you must write.  This gives you the freedom to write about something you are passionate about.  It also gives you the freedom to choose a topic that will be well received in the market place, and therefore very profitable for you.

2)  You decide when to write. You can write when it is convenient for you.  If you’re working a regular job, you don’t have to quit while you’re writing your first booklet and building your business.  If you have small children, you can write while they nap in the afternoon, or in the evening after they have gone to bed.  You write when you want to or when you can.  You are able to write when you are motivated, and when you have the time or the house is quiet.  This allows you to work on building your profit around the everyday hassles of life.

3)  You decide how much to write. Will yours be a shorter booklet of 16 pages or a longer booklet of 24?  Will you write one booklet only, or will you publish a series?  Or perhaps you will write many booklets on many different subjects, or create several different series of booklets.  You are completely in charge of how much to write, and how many booklets you want to create.  The more you create, the more potential profit you will bring in.

4)  You decide when to publish. Is there a special holiday that coincides with your booklet?  You can publish your booklet a month or two in advance of the holiday, when people are thinking about it and therefore more apt to purchase your booklet.  Do you need to publish and get to market fast?  You can decide to publish just as soon as your manuscript is finished.  It’s all up to you – and the soon you publish the sooner you can begin making money.

5)  You decide how to publish. Will you publish hard copies or will your booklet only be available as a download online?  Or maybe you would like to do both.  As the owner of a booklet business, it’s completely up to you.  It’s your decision and you can base it on your marketplace and your budget.

6)  You decide how much to charge. One of the biggest problems with using a traditional publishing house is that they control the amount of profit you can make.  They decide what to charge and how much of the profit will go to you.  But, not when you have your own booklet business!  You are the one in control of the pricing and how much per booklet you will earn.  The more you charge, the more you earn, and the more unlimited your profits become.

7)  You decide who to sell to. Do you want to sell to large companies?  Small businesses?  Individuals?  It’s all up to you.  You have the power to make large quantity sales, or to sell to thousands or even millions of individuals.  Want to do it all?  You can do that too!   Having the freedom to sell to everyone within your marketplace gives you unlimited profit potential.

8)  You decide how your booklets will be sold. Will you sell by mail?  Online?  Through a catalog or website?  By word of mouth?  By request only?  By invitation only?  Through an organization that is linked with the subject of your booklet?  There are many ways to sell booklets, and the more ways you sell the more unlimited your profits will be.

9)  You decide whether to create additional products. Do you want to stay in the booklet business and only sell booklets, or do you want to expand your business into other areas and sell other products?  There is no right answer, there is only the right answer for you.  For some, selling booklets is all they want to do.  There is unlimited profit in that alone because the more you sell the more you make.  For others, they might want to add other products to their booklets, or add other products to their business which stand on their own.  That’s fine too.  The more products you have to sell the more unlimited your profits will be.  Booklets are a product unto themselves, but you can add other products to your business at any time.

10)  You decide which markets you will serve. With a booklet business, you are in control of not only which markets you will serve, but also how many.  If you have a booklet about how to strengthen your relationship with your spouse, you can choose to market only to people who have filed for but are not yet divorced, or to people who have filed for a certificate of marriage, or to newly-weds, or to couples who have been married for at least 10 years, or to gay couples, or to couples with children.  You can start with one market and then branch out, or if your first market is especially profitable, you might decide to stick with that particular niche.  Being able to make your own decisions about which markets you will serve means being able to increase your profits because you don’t have to serve unprofitable markets.  You have the potential for unlimited profit because you can serve as many profitable markets as you choose to.

When you own a booklet business, you determine your own profit.  Are you ready to get started?

To your riches!

Traditional Publishing Houses – Are They Your Friend Or Foe?

Have you been wondering whether you should submit your booklet manuscript to a traditional publisher?  Many authors feel publishing will be much easier if they can just find a publishing house to take care of the work for them.  But, there are some things you should know which just might make you rethink sending your work to a traditional publisher.

Few Publishers Accept Booklet Manuscripts

The majority of publishing houses in the U.S. are looking for full length books.  Authors who are trying to have a full length book published can attest to the fact that even with many different publishers to choose from, it is difficult to find a publisher willing to give you a contract.  There are more writers than publishers, and with a vast amount of manuscripts to choose from publishers can afford to be picky.

The Economy Has Forced Publishers To Publish Less Material

Newspapers and magazines that have been in business for years have shut down, and many bookstores have closed their doors due to the lack of consumer spending.  This is one of the major factors which has forced publishers to cut back on the amount of manuscripts they will accept for publication.  The other major factor is the rise in costs of paper and ink.

In the past, publishers could afford to take a chance on a newcomer to the publishing arena.  Now, they want someone who has a proven track record.  Publishers can no longer afford to take chances, no matter how good your manuscript may be.  They are looking for a guarantee that your work will sell.

With Publishers It’s Never About The Author

When you have a contract with a publisher, it’s always about them.  It’s never about you.  The publisher has to look out for their business, their stock holders, their employees, their profits, and their assets.  Authors are a dime a dozen as far as the publisher is concerned, unless your name happens to be J.K. Rowling or you’re a famous celebrity or you have a proven track record.  Publishers are not concerned about running out of manuscripts to publish.  There is more than an ample supply of those.

You, on the other hand, must be concerned about your business, your profits and your assets.   You want and need to make money – something you can’t do when the publisher is taking the majority of profits from your work.   As the sole publisher of your work, you keep all the profit from every sale you make.  There is nobody else telling you that they will take the lion’s share and give you the crumbs that are left over.  You get to keep it all!

Also, should you choose to self publish, you will keep control of  your work.  Did you know that a publisher can change the title of your work, make final decisions on cover design, and even decide when or if they will make your work available to the public?  As the author of the work you might have little to no say in these decisions because the publisher is the one in charge, not you.  You’re simply an outside contractor.  It’s almost as if they think they’re doing you a favor by accepting your work and publishing it, so they don’t need to be concerned about asking your opinion on all the little details.  They’ve been in the business a long time so they know what they’re doing, right?  If they know what they’re doing then why are they having such a difficult time selling books in the first place?

Self Publishing Booklets Is Easy And Inexpensive

As much as booklets are quick to write, they’re also very inexpensive to produce when compared with a book.  Self publishing a booklet is easy.  To publish your work simply means making it available to the public.  So many people think there is some hidden secret to publishing a book or booklet, that you have to be an insider in the industry to know what to do.  That idea has certainly kept the publishers in business for a long time.  But, new technology has allowed authors to publish their work themselves, and shed light on the truth that publishers didn’t want us to know – that anyone who wants to can do this!

Given that self publishing is easy and inexpensive, you can keep control of your work and keep all the profits, why would you even consider going through a publishing house?

To your riches,

Kim

Author’s Self Published Title Outsells His Traditional Publishing House Books

Travel writer, Tim Leffel, decided to write a travel book after the birth of his first child.  The book did so well, he later got a contract with a traditional publishing house to write other travel books.  But, his first title, which he self published, has been outselling his later, traditionally published books.

You don’t need a traditional publisher to make money from your writing.  You also don’t need to write a full length book.  I can see a missed opportunity for booklets (yes, booklets – as in plural!) in the very niche that this gentleman is writing for.

Here is the story.  May you be inspired!

Literary Agents – What You Need To Know Before You Sign

Have you been thinking about extending your booklet into a book and finding an agent to represent you to a publisher?  If you have, there are a few things you should know before you try to secure an agent.

First, agents prefer to work with published authors who have already proven themselves within their marketplace.  If you have authored a booklet and it has sold well, you have met this criteria.  You have a waiting audience for your book.  But, this is about the only good thing you’ll have going for you with an agent.  Here’s why.

When you’re under contract with an agent, that agent will take 15% of the money your book makes for the life of your book.  That means as long as your book is in existence, every time it sells the agent gets paid off the top, before you ever see a penny.

But, money isn’t the only thing you must consider when hiring an agent.  You must also consider your cost of time.  It may take that agent months to find a publisher willing to publish your book – if they find a publisher at all.  And once they do, the publisher is under no obligation to publish your book within a certain time frame.  Most publishers will publish a book within 12 – 18 months of acceptance.

Sometimes, the publisher will decide at a later date not to publish your book.  This can be a real blow to an author who has signed the contract and eagerly anticipated seeing their book in print for months.

Finding an agent slows down the process of getting your work into print, and therefore getting money from your work into your pocket.  Not every agent will be willing sign you, and when you finally do get one you’ll be at their mercy when it comes to getting your book published.  You literally give up control of your work and the time it takes to get it to market.  In fact, finding an agent won’t guarantee your book will make it to market at all.

This is why I chose to self publish booklets.  I can get to market on my own – fast, and I don’t have the high costs associated with self publishing a full length book.  I’m in control of everything – from my titles to my cover design to how much money I make per copy sold or per deal made.  I keep every cent my booklets bring in.  I wouldn’t have it any other way.

If you don’t want to give up control of your work, I would advise against hiring a literary agent or attempting to go the traditional publishing route at all.  In fact, if you’re booklet has sold well, you’ve got a waiting audience for a second booklet.  Why not take advantage of that rather than running all over creation trying to find an agent, and then waiting for months on end to see what develops from that?  Writing your second booklet will take far less time than trying to expand your current booklet into a full length book, and you’ll have two titles on the market for people to buy – which will net you much more money than your book would anyway.

As a booklet author, you’re in complete control.  Isn’t that what you really want?

To your riches!

What The Book Publishers Never Tell You And Why You Can Make 10 Times More Money With Booklets

There are many good reasons for writing and publishing a booklet, but the best reason of all is the amount of profit you can make from it.  Unlike traditional publishing where you submit your work to a publishing house, and unlike traditional self publishing where you must find a distributor, when you publish a booklet you are in control of how much money you make per sale.

If you were to submit a manuscript to a publishing house and they accepted it for publication, they may or may not pay you an advance up front.  If they do, that advance may be the only money you ever see for all of your hard work.  And if your book doesn’t sell, you may be responsible to pay that advance back.  If it does sell, often your royalties from sales will be withheld until your advance has been recouped by the publishing house.  And, if there are sales of your book, you will receive a small percentage of the net sales price once the advance has been recouped.  Rarely do publishing houses pay percentages of the gross or actual retail selling price.

To illustrate this, let’s say your book is priced by the publishing house at $20.00, but the net price after expenses is $10.00 per book.  Most publishing houses pay around 6% in royalties, which in this case would net you about .60 cents per book sold.  That means that for every 100 books sold, you would earn $60.00.  By contrast, on that same 100 books that are sold the publishing house will make $940.00, or $9.40 per book once your .60 cent royalty is paid. Oh, and did I mention that you will be responsible for nearly all the marketing of your book in order to make it a success?  So, you give the publishing house your book, they make most of the money, and you do most of the work.  That’s a pretty dismal arrangement, isn’t it?

Now, let’s say you opt to self publish your book and you want to make it available in bookstores.  In order to do this you must go through a distributor, and distributors are very picky about which books they will accept.  They are even more picky when it comes to new authors.  One of their criteria is price.  If your book isn’t priced about the same as competing books in your market, the distributors won’t be interested.  If it’s priced too low they won’t make any money.  If it’s priced too high they don’t believe it will sell, and again they won’t make any money.  This means you are at the mercy of the distributor as to how much you can get for your book.  You have to play the game by their rules or you’re out.

The true freedom in being a published author comes from being able to set your own rules and your own pricing.  And this is what you can do with a booklet.  You won’t have to worry about a publishing house determining your price and paying you a tiny percentage.  And you won’t have to be concerned with meeting the demands of a distributor.  And, since your costs to produce your booklet will be a mere fraction of what it would cost to produce a book, you can make far more money per booklet sold.  You will be able to determine your own price, and nearly all of it will be profit in your pocket.  Instead of making .60 cents per booklet, you can make $4.00, $5.00, $6.00 or even more per booklet sold.  Now, you’re making as much as $600.00 or more per 100 booklets sold rather than only $60.00.  I think that’s much better, don’t you?

You can’t get rich when someone else controls the purse strings.  You need the freedom to be able to price your booklet as high as you can, as much as your market will bear, so that you can make as much money as you can.  You can’t do this through traditional means, but you can when you’re the boss – which is exactly what you’ll be with a booklet!

To your riches!

How To Get Rid Of The Evil Time Sucking Vampires That Are Robbing You Of Your Writing Time

Today’s world is a fast paced one.  We’ve got only 24 hours in a day, and about a third of it we spend asleep.  The rest of the time is spent frantically rushing from one activity to the next, trying to fit everything in.  And somewhere, in the midst of it all, you would like to write a booklet – if you only had the time.  If this sounds like you then listen up, my friend, because you’re about to lose the no time excuse.

The reason you rush around and live such a hectic pace is because you aren’t planning your time.  What you need is a simple plan for some organization.  What I’m about to reveal to you can work for anything in your life as well as your writing, so pay attention!

An easy way to solve the time crunch is to block out a certain amount of time each day for your writing.  If you’re working a nine to five job and you’ve got children, you might want to block out an hour before work in the morning or an hour after the kids are asleep at night.  Or, you can use your lunch hour if you have a quiet place to work uninterrupted.  If you’re not working a nine to five job, you’ve probably got more time than you think you do.

Every day there are evil, time sucking vampires that literally rob you of precious minutes which add up to hours.  Once you are aware of them, you can deal with them quickly and efficiently and get more time out of your day.  Let me give you the most common ones.

The first one is the telephone.  This evil time sucking machine can interrupt you at any time without warning.  It rings and you feel compelled to answer.  Stop that right now!  Unless you’re expecting an urgently important call, you do not have to answer that phone during your writing time!  Unplug it if you need to, because chances are it’s your best friend Gladys or your Aunt Mary just calling to catch up.  Let her leave you a message (you DO have an answering machine or service, right?  If not, get one!).  You can get back to her after your writing time is finished.

The next one is your cell phone.  Like the telephone, it can ring at any time.  But this one’s even worse because you can also receive text messages, and while they may seem benign, they’ll rob you of even more time than a conversation by voice.  Why?  Because it takes longer to text than it does to speak.  Your best bet here is to turn off your cell phone during your writing time.  My own cell phone is turned off nearly all the time, unless I’m expecting a call or I need to make one.

The third is your email.  How much time do you spend reading and answering email?  If you’re like most people, you probably spend an hour a day or more.  It’s time to do a little email clean-up.  First, you need to get rid of your email notifier if you can or if you have one.  This is the little widget that pops up on your screen each time you get a letter in your in box.  I used to have one of these and sure enough, every time it would pop up I’d be curious to see what came into my in box, so I would have to go look.  Then, I was hooked.  I just had to deal with that mail right now.  This is bad!  I got rid of the notifier and now I deal with email just once a day.

After getting rid of your notifier, you need to start looking at the mail that comes to you and unsubscribe from anything that isn’t vital (No, that does NOT include this blog!!! :-) .  I’m talking about advertisements from department stores and certain bookstores that like to inundate you with email.  Get rid of it.  You don’t need to spend your time reading their ads.  The only email you should be getting should be personal or business related, or it should be truly useful to you in some way.  The rest needs to go.

Getting your telephone, cell phone and email under control should easily allow you to block out at least an hour a day for your writing.  Maybe you’ll even be able to block out two hours a day.  So, no more excuses!  You do have time to write.  You just need to write instead of doing some of the other things you’re doing – things which won’t be nearly as profitable for you as getting your booklet on the market!

In my next post, we’ll hit another excuse right outta the ball park!

To your riches!

What You Can Learn From Donald Trump, Oprah Winfrey and J.K. Rowling

A couple of days ago I wrote about moving forward.  One of the things that keeps people from moving forward is making excuses.  That is going to change for you starting right now!

Super successful people like Oprah Winfrey and Donald Trump don’t make excuses.  They deal with whatever comes up as it arises, learn what they need to know to get through it or cope with it the best way they can, and they keep moving forward.  I know you want to be super successful as an author,  so grab something that’s nailed down to the floor because I’m about to blow all those excuses away!

One of the most common excuses writers make for not starting their booklet (or book) is they don’t feel they are worthy to write it.  Does this sound like you?  Do you find yourself saying, “Who am I to write a book?”  Do you feel like nobody would read your book because you are not already well known and you don’t have anything to write that would interest anyone?  You want to do it, but you just can’t get past this feeling that you don’t have enough credit to do it.  Let’s blow this excuse away right now!

Few writers are well known when they write their first book.  Donald Trump and Oprah Winfrey are exceptions, but for every writer like Donald Trump and Oprah, there are thousands more who were unknown when they started.  And Donald Trump and Oprah were not even writers to begin with.  Donald Trump is first and foremost a real estate developer, while Oprah is a talk show host.  Did they have any business writing a book?  Not really.  But, they did it anyway.

J.K. Rowling is another story.  She was an unknown when she wrote the first Harry Potter book.  I admit I’m not a fan of the series.  I’ve never read a Harry Potter book nor seen any of the movies.  But, I love the J.K Rowling Publishing story.  She had an idea.  She wrote the manuscript.  She peddled it to all the major publishers and got nothing but rejection.  Finally, a smaller publisher was willing to take a chance, and the rest is history.  Today, she is a well known author, but she came from utter obscurity.  Is her story any more important than yours?  Of course not!  You’ve got just as much right as she does to write your manuscript and get your story or your message to the public.  The main difference is that you’ve got a faster way to do it than she did, because you’re going to write a booklet (I assume this since you’re reading this blog).

The truth is, everyone is important.  Everyone has knowledge that someone else can benefit from.  Who am I to write for the medical community?  I’m not a doctor or a nutritionist.  Yet, from my own experience I was able to write three booklets that the medical community finds very helpful.

You’re knowledge and information is valid.  It will be helpful to someone.  Think about it.  People come to you for advice on things you know about.  Those things are the things you need to write in a booklet.  Don’t worry that you don’t know enough or that you have no credibility.  Nobody is born with credibility.  It is something that you build over time.  And as for what you know, there are plenty of people who know less than you do and they will be the ones who will need your booklet.

Now that we’ve got that excuse out of the way, I’ll blow another one away in the next post!

To your riches!

It’s Time To Move Forward! Your Riches Are Waiting For You!

This year is almost over, and as it is quickly coming to a close, I am reflecting over the past year and how well my business did,  and thinking ahead to the new year and the goals I want to accomplish.  Most people won’t be thinking about this until January 1st or 2nd, but it’s difficult to make a plan the same day you intend to implement it.  So, I’m starting early.

How about you?  I’m sure you’ll have many things you would like to accomplish in the new year, like that booklet you’ve been intending to write.  The toughest part about writing a booklet is starting it.  You get the idea and think about it and think about it some more.  But you never seem to find the time to sit down and start it.  The time gets away from you.  Something more important that needs your attention always seems to crop up.

It’s time to move forward.  If you don’t, the next year will be just like this year.  Personally I can’t stand to stay stuck in one place, living the same kind of day over and over again where nothing ever changes.  I have to have new things going on and happening for me every day or I just go stir crazy like a wild animal in a cage!  So, each day I set new things in motion.  I do something every day that will move things forward and keep the momentum going.  Everyday brings me new things because of what I’ve done the day before or the week before or the month before.

You must do the same thing if you’re going to see new and better things happen for you in the new year.  Taking action is the key to making things happen.  Nothing ever comes from wishing for it or talking about it.  You must make the decision to do it, and then follow through.  This applies to anything you wish to accomplish, booklets or otherwise.

So how about it?  Are you ready to move forward?  Your riches are waiting for you!

To your riches!

How To Make Money And Avoid Losses When You’re Just Starting Your Booklet Venture

When I created my second booklet, I printed 1,000 hard copies after being told to do so by an “expert” in the industry.  It turned out to be a very bad piece of advice which cost me alot of money and gave me little in return.  The expert was giving advice based on their own experience, but they failed to take into account my specific market and my marketing abilities at the time.  It was like being hired to do a job, and not knowing what the job is or what it requires.  In a situation like that, there’s no way to win.

When you’re new to something, it’s best to start small.  Create your booklet and test it and your marketing skills before you invest alot of money.  You want to make sure you’ve got a winner.  You want to know how your market will receive it, and which way is the best way to deliver it.  And if you’ve never been involved in sales or marketing, it will take a little time for you to learn what you need to know.  Even if you do have sales or marketing experience, you can’t know how your product will be received by your specific market until you get out there and test your product.

Everyone makes mistakes when they are just starting out.  If you’ve ever seen a small child just learning to walk, you’ve seen how many times they fall before they can finally keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep going.  But, that child doesn’t give up.  They do learn to walk, and it usually happens pretty fast.

The same is true for you when you begin your first booklet venture.  Just like a little child, you will fall a few times.  That’s ok – as long as you don’t get hurt in the process.  By starting small, you’ll avoid getting hurt in the pocket book.  You’ll also avoid alot of frustration because you won’t feel like you’re trying to move a mountain.  And then, before you know it, you’ll be able to keep your feet under you.  You’ll be able to stand your ground and keep going.

Starting small doesn’t mean fewer profits.  It is a way to avoid losses, many of which will be large losses if you start too big.

To your riches!
