New Beginnings – The Three Myths of Starting A Business And What It REALLY Takes To Get Rich Writing Booklets

Would you like to get rich writing booklets?  Are you wondering what it really takes in order to do that?  Here’s the scoop!

Myth #1 – The Money Myth – BUSTED!!!

Maybe you’ve heard the old saying, “It takes money to make money.” Most people believe that in order to start a business you need to have alot of money in the bank.  In fact, many authors who would like to self publish, also mistakenly believe this myth.

While it’s true that some business start-ups do require thousands of dollars (such as when one goes into the franchise business), and while it’s also true that self publishing generally takes a fair amount of cash out of your pocket, booklet publishing can be done on a shoestring. With booklets, your wallet can breathe a sigh of relief!

Myth #2 – The Website Myth – BUSTED!!!

Ok.  So, you don’t need alot of money.  But, what about a website?  Just 20 years ago this would have been unthinkable!  Websites didn’t exist, yet millions of businesses flourished. How can this be?

Businesses do well for two main reasons.  First, they have a product somebody wants or needs.  And second, they know who those people are who want and need their products. It does no good to write a fantastic booklet if you have no idea who might read it.  And, if you know who might read it but your booklet is not of value to them, they won’t be interested.

Before websites existed, businesses flaunted their products in front of consumers in a variety of ways – via television, radio, billboards, sales calls, home parties, door to door selling and wearable advertising.  While most of these ideas will be out of reach for you financially and would make little sense pursuing even if you did have the budget to do it, the real take away here is the creativity and effort those businesses put forth to sell their products.

If a website is out of your budget at the moment, don’t despair.  You don’t need a website to make sales.  You just need a little creativity!  There are many avenues to making a sale.  A website is only one of them.  And it’s a good idea to learn as many of those avenues as you can, even if you do decide to create a website from the start.  The more ways you have of selling your booklet, the more ways you have for money to come to you!

MYTH #3 – THE OFFICE/EQUIPMENT MYTH – BUSTED!!!

How about some fancy equipment or a fancy office?  Do you think you need those before you can start making some real money?  Think again!  Your readers won’t know or care what kind of computer you have, nor whether you wrote your booklet from a corner office with a view in Manhattan, or your kitchen table with your laundry pile sitting next to you on the floor!

A fancy office, like a fancy car, is a symbol of prestige.  But, when you think about it, nobody wants to put more time in at the office.  In fact, since the home computer first came on the market, more people have left their fancy office in favor of working from home than ever before in history.  And, if you are working from home, even if it is from your kitchen table, there’s some guy in an office somewhere who envies YOU!

WHAT IT REALLY TAKES

Now that you know you don’t need a fancy office, special equipment, alot of money or even a website to get rich writing booklets, you’re probably wondering just what you DO need.

First, you need the determination to succeed.  As corny as that might sound to you, it’s true.  It doesn’t matter how big your vision is or how large you want your empire to be if you’re not willing to stay the course. So many people start a business and a year later they’ve quit.  Showing up to work every day really is 99% of the game.

Second, you need to be willing to learn.  Nobody knows everything there is to know about starting a business when they start.  But, anyone can learn what they need to know as they go.

When Oprah started out in television, she was a news reporter.  She learned as she went and started her own talk show.  She learned some more, and now has her own network.  It’s a process.

That’s it.  If you possess the determination to succeed and you’re willing to learn as you go, you can do it.  You can succeed and get rich writing booklets!

To your riches!

New Beginnings: The Road You Take Determines The Price You Pay

Everything in life has a price attached to it.  When you make the decision to start your booklet adventure, you are choosing to pay the price that goes along with that decision.  Most people choose what they think is the easiest thing to do, but often they’re the ones who end up paying the highest price of all.

Two Choices

When it comes to making money there are only two choices.  You can either work for yourself, or you can work for someone else.  Each choice has its price. The vast majority of people will choose to work for someone else.  Why?  Because it seems to so much easier.  And, at the outset, it is.

Working for someone else is easier because it means you have less responsibility for making sure you get paid. A paycheck is automatic as long as you show up on time and do as you’re told.  And for many people, this is enough.  It’s all they want.  But, for some, it may as well be a death sentence.

Stifled

Some people are natural born entrepreneurs.  They see the start of a new business at the drop of a hat and the wheels start turning.  They can’t help it.  It’s just the way they’re wired.  They’re not thinking about finding a job.  They’re thinking about building an empire.

These people find themselves stifled in a regular day job.  They may take a job with the best of intentions, but they soon find they are miserable – often because they want to contribute to the company in ways that are not well received. For example, they may get ideas for new products, or better customer service policies, or for ways to save the company money, only to have those ideas shot down by their superiors who either feel threatened by the ideas, or prefer things to remain as they are.

The entrepreneur at heart will lose a little more of their life each day that they remain employed by someone else.  They are paying a far heavier price, in terms of their happiness, and peace, and probably their income by staying where they are rather than taking the high road and making a go of it on their own.

Which Price Will You Pay?

Working for someone else can exact its toll in many ways.  While a paycheck may be guaranteed for as long as you are employed, you have no guarantee of any long term employment. Layoffs, mergers, closures and bankruptcies happen.  Job security is a thing of the past. Also, Paychecks get cut,  Co-workers can be nasty, and superiors can be arrogant.  Add to that the fact that for the hours you work for them they own you, and it’s a pretty hefty price to pay.

But what about the entrepreneurial road?  What about starting your booklet adventure?  Is there a price to pay for that?  Yes.  There is a price for everything in life.  But, the price isn’t nearly as steep as it is with the alternative, and there are many perks.

First of all, when you begin your booklet adventure, you’re making the decision to take your destiny into your own hands. And while that can seem like a scary thing, the truth is it’s LIBERATING!  You control how much money you make, not some supervisor or boss.  No more begging for a raise!

Also, as the sole owner of your own booklet publishing company, you’ll wear many different hats in the beginning – everything from mail room clerk to CEO.  But, in time that will change as your business grows.

As an added perk, you’ll become an author, which will make you a celebrity.  You don’t get that working for peanuts over at XYZ! And while you may not get sick leave or vacation time, you won’t need it.  Instead of one or two weeks off, you can take one or two MONTHS off if you want to.  And you’ll also have the freedom to take some extra time for lunch, or just work half a day without having to ask permission from anyone.  And best of all, you’ll get to do what you LOVE – write – and get PAID for it!

There is a price to be paid for starting your booklet adventure, but considering the alternative, in terms of your financial stability and long term happiness taking the high road is the only way to go!  Why not start your booklet adventure today!

To your riches!

The REAL Riches That Come From Writing Booklets

When you first came to this blog and read the title, “Writing For Riches With Booklets,” What did you think of?  What picture did the word “riches” create in your mind?  Did you think of large checks and piles of cash?  Certainly that is what the title implies.  But, true riches are so much more than just monetary gain.

Why It’s Not Just About A Pile Of Cash

I have often said that the only reason for embarking upon your own booklet adventure is to make money. And this is true – unless you are looking for a hobby.  But, since you’re reading a blog about writing for riches I will assume that is what you want to do – make money.

Once you are making money with your booklets, however, you will see that the money is only part of the riches you will acquire from your efforts.  Money in and of itself really doesn’t mean very much.  The true riches are found in what the money can DO for you.

But What If…..

If you’re working a regular day job and you’re happy with what you’re doing and what you’re earning, you are in a very small minority group.  Most people hate going to work every day, and they barely scrape by on what they earn.  It just doesn’t seem fair to have to work so hard at something you don’t enjoy, only to earn a tiny amount of money that doesn’t begin to cover all the bills and necessities, and leaves you with nothing at the end of the month.

Assuming you are in the majority, going to a job everyday that isn’t fulfilling, feeling like you’re going nowhere, and never having enough money to pay everything you need to, what if you could have something better? What if you could make enough money to live on very comfortably doing something you enjoy?  And what if that gave you the upper hand on your own destiny?  And what if, in the process of your moving forward and going somewhere, you were able to help others along the way?

What Writing Booklets Is Really All About

This is what writing booklets is really all about.  It is first and foremost about making money, but not simply for the sake of making money.  It’s about making money so you can have peace of mind and freedom – the peace of mind of knowing your bills are paid and the necessities are covered and there is plenty left over, and the freedom to spend your time doing what you enjoy.

A couple of days ago I ran into an acquaintance of mine at a local starbucks.  Since it was later in the day she assumed I was just getting off work and heading home.  I laughed and replied, “No.  I’m not heading home from work.  I’m heading home from playing.  I get to play every day!”  She said that I was very lucky, and I could tell she had no idea how I could achieve this non-working status.

How did I achieve it?  It’s simple.  I love what I do.  For me it isn’t work.  I’ve loved to write since I was a child, and writing booklets is a natural way for me to use that gift.  Interestingly, this lady is also a self published writer, not of booklets but of children’s books.  Yet, as much as she puts her heart into her work, she hasn’t figured out what I have - how to reap riches from your writing in both monetary and non-monetary ways and live a life of freedom.

Booklets can do for you what they did for me.  They can bring you riches – not just in the form of money but in the form of peace of mind and freedom.  And those are the best riches of all!

To YOUR riches!

The Most Wonderful Thing About Writing Booklets

Have you ever thought about why you would like to write a booklet?  Or, if you’re booklet is already written and produced, have you given any thought as to why you created it in the first place?  It’s easy to get caught up in the writing and production process – in the doing – and lose sight of why you are doing it.

The Real Reason For Writing Booklets

When you create a booklet, you’re not creating it just for the sake of having the experience. When you decide to embark upon your booklet adventure, it may seem very simple to you.  You like to write, you want to get to market fast and make money, and this seems like the best way to do that.  And while that’s true, if that’s all you see you’re missing the real point.

The point of writing a booklet isn’t really about making money.  Yes, it’s wonderful to get to market fast and see that cash coming in.  But, the real reason for writing booklets is to enrich your life and the lives of others.

Riches Come In Many Varieties

The riches that you gain from writing a booklet come in many varieties.  Money is only one of them.  There are many other benefits that will be yours as well, and all you need to do is reach out and take them!

One of those benefits is your expert status.  You’ll be known by your audience as an expert in whatever topic you choose to write about.  This is a much larger benefit than you realize because when people see you as an expert, you’re the one they will come to again and again for help. That help may come in the form of more booklets, or other products, or classes you teach, or speeches you give, or private consultations or coaching sessions.  Expert status is a benefit with far reaching importance to your bottom line!

What is money, really?  Little pieces of paper that represent something of value.  But, why is it valued?  You don’t value money itself.  You value what money can do for you – and it can do alot, including giving you freedom you didn’t have before.  It’s the freedom you value – the freedom to choose something better for yourself and your family that you couldn’t choose before.  And that enriches your life and the lives of those you care about.

As Your Audience Benefits, So Do You

You are not the only one who will benefit and gain riches from your booklet.  Your audience will too.  They have a need for information.  That need is a problem in their life that your booklet can solve.  It will help them, and as it does it will help you.  It’s the best kind of situation because everybody wins!

When your booklet is on the market and people buy it, some of those people will send you compliments.  They will thank you for taking the time to write such a helpful and informative booklet, and they will probably include a story of how that booklet helped them.

This does several things for you.  First, it tells you that you’re on the right track – your booklet is just what your audience needed.  Second, it gives you a good feeling because you have helped someone else. It adds some extra significance and meaning to your life and gives you a purpose for doing what you do (writing booklets).  And third, it creates goodwill between you and those who buy from you, and that makes your audience more likely to buy from you again.

When you think of riches from writing booklets, don’t just think about money.  Think about feeling good, and having the freedom to live your life the way you want to, and helping others.  The riches that come from booklet writing are many and varied, and that is the most wonderful thing!

To your riches!

How To Leverage Your Booklet For The Most Riches

Do you know what leverage is?  Leverage is an advantage.  It is getting the most out of something.  Think of it as getting the most gain for the least amount of pain (pain being work!).

There are untold riches in a single booklet when you know how to leverage that booklet. And if you have more than one booklet, that’s even better!

Create Your Booklet Once And Sell It Forever

One way you gain leverage from your booklet is that you only have to write it once, yet you can sell it over and over again. This is a huge advantage over services businesses where you must perform a service and get paid for your time.  You can’t leverage your time because you only have 24 hours in a day and you can never give them all.  And you can’t sell the same hour over and over again.

But, there are many product businesses that also cannot be leveraged – such as selling crafts.  If you create a craft item and sell it, it’s gone forever and you must create a new one to sell the next time.  But, once your booklet is written, the work is done and you have a product that can be sold repeatedly.

One Booklet Equals Many Products

Another way you can create leverage from your booklet is to develop other products from it. For example, you might offer your booklet as a download, and then develop hard copies, a CD and an MP3 from the same booklet.  Now you have four different formats to offer your booklet in, and each one can be viewed as a separate product.

You see this all the time.  If you have ever visited any guru’s website, you’ll often see that they offer teleseminars and everyone who signs up gets either an MP3 or CD of the seminar at a later time.

Another thing you’ll often see one of these gurus do is offer a product in printed form, and then offer that same product in a CD format.  Why?  Because it adds value to their product.  They didn’t have to write any more content.  All they had to do was take the content that they already created and record it.

You can do this very same thing!  Once your manuscript is created, you can create different products from it without much, if any, additional work.

Leveraging Your Idea And Your Market With Spin-Offs

Finally, another way to leverage your booklet is to create spin-off products or a series from it. This is really leveraging your idea as well as your market, but you need that first booklet in order for this to happen.

When I created my first booklet, once it was selling and I had established my market, I created two spin-off titles from it that I knew would be of interest to that same market.  I now have a series of three booklets, and have since come up with ideas for several more booklets I can create within that series for that particular market.

Spin-off products include much more than just creating a series of booklets.  You might decide to create a workbook to go with your booklet, or you might create a DVD.  TV shows will create toys and other products as a spin-off, and often they’ll take a character or two from one show and create a spin-off show using those same characters.

With a spin-off product you will have some extra work to do, but it’s well worth the effort if you’ve already got an established market.

When you create a booklet, you should get as much leverage from it as you possibly can.  The more leverage you have, the more riches you’ll make!

Got an idea for leverage that I left out?  Please leave your comments below!

The Big Secret That The Pros Know And You Don’t (HINT: It’s Not About The Writing)

Why does one book make the best seller list, while another book written just as well in the same genre, doesn’t?  Why does one author become rich and famous while another, who is equally talented, is never able to make enough money to leave their day job?

Good writing and talent are important, but they can only take you so far. The real answer to these questions has nothing to do with your ability to write a good sentence.  The answer can be summed up in one word: presentation.

Presentation – It’s Not What You Think

Presentation is not what you think it is.  It isn’t standing in front of a room full of decision makers and trying to talk them into a deal.  And it isn’t what you wear.

Presentation is everything you are, and everything your product is, and everything your business is.  In short, it’s the total package.

It’s The Little Details That Count

Creating a top notch product, which in this case is your booklet, is only a small fraction of your presentation.  While you want your booklet to be good in both content and appearance, you don’t want to neglect all the other little details of your business.

One of those little details is your delivery method for your booklet.  Another is how you deal with people over the phone.  And then there’s the way you position and promote your booklet.  It’s all a part of your overall presentation.

Macy’s vs. Nordstrom

When it comes right down to it, Macy’s and Nordstrom both sell clothing – many of the same brands.  But, Nordstrom has done a better job with their presentation.  It’s not the clothes they sell or even how they’re displayed.  It’s the piano player and the upscale decor that give you a feeling of luxury when you walk into the store.  It’s the cafe that offers organic and gourmet foods.  It’s the total package that creates an almost indulgent experience.

The kind of presentation you create for your booklet and your business will depend upon your own style and the subject of your booklet. Your presentation might be serious, or it might be more upbeat and fun.  It might be thrifty or somewhat lavish.  But, whatever it is it should be professional, consistent, and authentic to who you are and what you do.

The right presentation is what gives you an edge.  It’s that little bit of magic that makes things happen.  It’s the secret nobody talks about, but all the pros know.  Make yours the best it can be.

To your riches!

How Embracing The Ways Of The Past Can Help You Rake In The Gold

Once upon a time customer service was just that – service, and it was done because the business owner or company truly cared about their customers.  Times have changed, and there’s gold here for the author who is willing to embrace the ways of the past.

The Way It Was

There used to be a day when you could go into a department store and as soon as you took an item off the rack you would have a sales person by your side offering to start you a dressing room. That was back in the day when gas stations offered full service – where they’d pump your gas, check your oil and wash your windshield.  And if you went to the bakery and bought a dozen doughnuts they’d throw in an extra one for free.

Over the course of time department stores hired less people, gas stations decided people would rather pump their own gas for a cheaper price, and bakeries stopped giving out free doughnuts.  Genuine customer service became a thing of the past as companies began to focus more on their own bottom line.

The Way It Is

Today it’s difficult to find a company that cares – even in micro-businesses where the owner is the business.  It’s not about the customer anymore.  It’s all about money – and the customer knows it.

People are skeptical of anything that seems genuine these days because they have learned that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.  And in most cases they’re right.  There are alot of snake oil salesmen out there waiting to pounce on the unsuspecting.  Nobody really cares about the customer anymore.  The customer has to look out for himself.

What It Means For You

What does all of this mean to you as a booklet author?  It means that when you conceive the idea for your booklet, you’re thinking, first, about how your information will help people, and money will always take a back seat to that.  It means that you write your booklet with care – thinking of what your audience needs or wants from you.

You’re not going to be like all those other companies and business people (and authors) out there who don’t care.  You’re going to be someone who does care.  You’re going to stand behind what you put into the marketplace and truly help people as much as you can. You’re going to be genuine – the real deal.

And do you know what will happen when you do this?  People will discover that there really is someone who cares about what they need or want.  There really is someone who is offering a genuine product and is willing to stand behind it.  And then they’ll want to buy from you over and over again, and they’ll tell everyone they know because you are such are rare find in the marketplace today.

Write your booklet because you care. It’s such a basic, simple concept and people WILL respond to it.  Put that care into everything you do – from your booklet manuscript to your marketing and sales – and you won’t have to worry about money.   You’ll be so set apart from everyone else you’ll literally rake in the gold!

To your riches!

How To Create Happy Customers In Your Booklet Business So You Rake In The Riches

Have you ever seen a commercial that really excited you and made you want to buy a product, and then you bought the product and were disappointed with it?  This has happened to all of us, but you don’t want it to happen to your booklet buyers.  The key to success in any business, booklet publishing or otherwise, is happy customers. Why?  Because happy customers come back and buy from you again.  Here’s how to keep your customers happy.

What Does Your Content DO For Your Reader?

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve heard that content is king.  This is as true for booklets as it is for any other medium.  Your booklet must contain content that is relevant to your market, valued by your market, and wanted by your market.

You can get out there and promote your booklet like a pro, but if your content doesn’t DO SOMETHING for your audience – give them information, tell them how to do something, improve their life in some way – you’ll lose.

On the other hand, if you create content that is invaluable to your market, and they get that in a short, easy to read little booklet – they’ll be begging you for more!

Snail Mail, E-Mail or Both?

While great content is at the core of making your customers happy, there is something to be said for the delivery of your product.  Do you know which delivery method your customers prefer?

Some markets prefer online delivery because it’s instant.  Others prefer mail delivery because they want something tangible they can hold in their hand and write notes on.  And some markets may be split, meaning you should offer a choice.

Do you remember the days before the internet, the days when mail order meant ordering from a catalog and then waiting for four to six weeks to receive your item?  You can’t get away with that now. Life is much faster these days and people are more impatient.  Just look at the negative feedback on Ebay and you’ll see that much of it is due to the customer’s dissatisfaction in regard to shipping time.

If you’re shipping booklets via snail mail, it’s best to ship the same day the order came in, or on the next business day.

Give Them More

Your content is great, and you’ve got quick shipping down pat.  What more could your customers want?  More! That’s right!  When they like your content and they know they’ll get their order quickly, they will want to buy more from you.

This means you need to create more products to satisfy your customers and keep them happy. Think about this.  If you purchased a great booklet that helped you with something, and you wanted more information but there wasn’t any more available, wouldn’t you be disappointed?  So will your customers!

This is actually good news because it means you’ve got a market that will buy from you again and again, stuffing your bank account with cash every time! And since your first booklet was only a small amount of information about your subject, you have plenty more that you can write about in your next booklet, and the one after that, and the one after that.

And don’t think that you must stick with booklets, either.  You can create other products too.  There’s nothing wrong with variety and chances are your market will appreciate it, as long as you create products they desire.  And just think – it all begins with one, simple booklet!

So write great content, ship it fast or make it available for instant download, and then go back and do it again!  Let the riches flow!

To your riches!

The Booklet Author’s List Of Things To Be Thankful For

As a booklet author you have much to be thankful for.  Here is a list to get you thinking….

1) Your ability to write. Most people don’t write well, and the majority actually hate to write.  You’ve got talent!  Be thankful!

2) Your discovery of this blog. Ok, not to sound conceited, but seriously, think of all the time you’ll save getting your work to market now that you know about booklets!  Getting it to market faster means making money faster!

4) All the ways you can make money from your booklet. Hey, just one booklet can create several different streams of income online and off!  There’s single sales, quantity sales, e-sales, specialty sales, and the list goes on!

5) Helping others. That’s what you do when you create a booklet.

6) The money you’ll save on production. Books are expensive to produce.  Booklets cost far less and often you won’t have to pay a dime to produce them.  Your buyers may just foot the bill themselves!

7) Being known as an expert about a topic you love or enjoy. Most people are never credited for their expertise.  As a booklet author, you’ll have credibility within your industry or from those associated with your topic.

8) Being your own boss. No more 9 – 5 for you.  No more daily grind.  Your life is your own and you can live it as you please!

9) Making a living doing what you love. Most people go to jobs they hate every day.  You get to do work that you enjoy.  In fact, it doesn’t even seem like work at all.  Lucky you!

10) Living your life the way you want to. Your destiny is in your hands.  What will you do?
