New Beginnings: The Road You Take Determines The Price You Pay

Everything in life has a price attached to it.  When you make the decision to start your booklet adventure, you are choosing to pay the price that goes along with that decision.  Most people choose what they think is the easiest thing to do, but often they’re the ones who end up paying the highest price of all.

Two Choices

When it comes to making money there are only two choices.  You can either work for yourself, or you can work for someone else.  Each choice has its price. The vast majority of people will choose to work for someone else.  Why?  Because it seems to so much easier.  And, at the outset, it is.

Working for someone else is easier because it means you have less responsibility for making sure you get paid. A paycheck is automatic as long as you show up on time and do as you’re told.  And for many people, this is enough.  It’s all they want.  But, for some, it may as well be a death sentence.

Stifled

Some people are natural born entrepreneurs.  They see the start of a new business at the drop of a hat and the wheels start turning.  They can’t help it.  It’s just the way they’re wired.  They’re not thinking about finding a job.  They’re thinking about building an empire.

These people find themselves stifled in a regular day job.  They may take a job with the best of intentions, but they soon find they are miserable – often because they want to contribute to the company in ways that are not well received. For example, they may get ideas for new products, or better customer service policies, or for ways to save the company money, only to have those ideas shot down by their superiors who either feel threatened by the ideas, or prefer things to remain as they are.

The entrepreneur at heart will lose a little more of their life each day that they remain employed by someone else.  They are paying a far heavier price, in terms of their happiness, and peace, and probably their income by staying where they are rather than taking the high road and making a go of it on their own.

Which Price Will You Pay?

Working for someone else can exact its toll in many ways.  While a paycheck may be guaranteed for as long as you are employed, you have no guarantee of any long term employment. Layoffs, mergers, closures and bankruptcies happen.  Job security is a thing of the past. Also, Paychecks get cut,  Co-workers can be nasty, and superiors can be arrogant.  Add to that the fact that for the hours you work for them they own you, and it’s a pretty hefty price to pay.

But what about the entrepreneurial road?  What about starting your booklet adventure?  Is there a price to pay for that?  Yes.  There is a price for everything in life.  But, the price isn’t nearly as steep as it is with the alternative, and there are many perks.

First of all, when you begin your booklet adventure, you’re making the decision to take your destiny into your own hands. And while that can seem like a scary thing, the truth is it’s LIBERATING!  You control how much money you make, not some supervisor or boss.  No more begging for a raise!

Also, as the sole owner of your own booklet publishing company, you’ll wear many different hats in the beginning – everything from mail room clerk to CEO.  But, in time that will change as your business grows.

As an added perk, you’ll become an author, which will make you a celebrity.  You don’t get that working for peanuts over at XYZ! And while you may not get sick leave or vacation time, you won’t need it.  Instead of one or two weeks off, you can take one or two MONTHS off if you want to.  And you’ll also have the freedom to take some extra time for lunch, or just work half a day without having to ask permission from anyone.  And best of all, you’ll get to do what you LOVE – write – and get PAID for it!

There is a price to be paid for starting your booklet adventure, but considering the alternative, in terms of your financial stability and long term happiness taking the high road is the only way to go!  Why not start your booklet adventure today!

Quick Tip: Give It Time

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ve heard me say more than once that Rome wasn’t built in a day, and that the same goes for your booklet business.  You can’t expect to start your business today and make a million dollars literally by this same time tomorrow.  And trust me, even if that WERE possible, you wouldn’t want to do it.

Why not?  Because as difficult as it is to wait for things to really get rolling, it’s a process that you MUST go through.  If you were able to go straight to the top without going through the process, you would not be ready to handle the workload at the top.

How fast you climb the steps to get to the top is up to you, but you want to make sure that you get there ONE step at a time.  Every step is important, because each one provides a learning experience that will help you when you reach the next level.

No matter where you are in your booklet adventure, enjoy it and learn as much as you can before you move to the next level.  You’ll get to the next step soon enough, and you want to make sure you’re well prepared!

To your riches!

Why You Don’t Get What You Deserve

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “They got what they deserved,” more than once in your life.  Usually it refers to a negative event that happens to someone.  But, both good and bad events happen to everyone, and it has nothing to do with how deserving you are.

Are Your Expectations Lofty Enough?

Whether you’re new to booklet publishing, or you’ve been around a while, you have certain expectations.  They may be lofty or they may be humble, but either way you’re far more certain to get what you expect than you are to get what you deserve.

Think about this.  Someone with high expectations will wake up in the morning and jump out of bed, eager to start their day.  They’ll have a spring in their step and a smile on their face because they are expecting good things to happen – and they’ll work hard to make sure they do.

By contrast, someone with low expectations will hit the snooze button.  Why bother getting up?  It’s just another ordinary day.  Nothing good ever seems to happen for them, so why will today be any different?  The truth is, with such low expectations today WON’T be any different.

You Shape Your Own Story

As the main character of your booklet adventure, you are the one who shapes your story.  You’re not just writing a booklet.  You’re building an empire. You can build a small empire, or you can build a large one.  Which one you choose will depend upon how much time and effort you decide to give it, and it will depend upon your mindset.

There are plenty of people in the world who are talented, or smart, or gifted in some way who never achieve greatness.  Why?  Because their expectations are too low.  The ones who make it can’t imagine any other outcome. They have high expectations and the mindset of a winner.

You Don’t Get What You Deserve

Forget about what you deserve.  Ask yourself what you expect.  Ask yourself where you mindset is.  Do you have great expectations for your booklet and your business?  Can you see in your mind’s eye an entire empire?  If you can, these things will give you strength and keep you going when you hit rough times.

You don’t get what you deserve.  You get what you expect.  Focus your mind on some high expectations and you’ll find yourself working to achieve them.

To your riches!

Quick Tip: How To Strengthen Your Weakest Link

When you first embark upon your booklet adventure, you will probably be doing everything yourself – from the writing to closing the sale to shipping.  This is the way nearly every entrepreneur begins – by wearing ALL the hats.

As time goes on, however, and your riches increase, you should find someone else to take over those jobs you don’t do well.  Hiring someone who is strong in the areas where you are weak will help to strengthen your business. It will also free up more time for you to focus on the things you do well – and probably enjoy more.

Your business is only as strong as your weakest link. Strengthen those links as soon as you can by giving those tasks you don’t do well to someone who is more qualified.  When each area of your business is handled by someone who is best suited for the task, your business will thrive and grow.

To your riches!

The #1 Key To Succeeding As A Booklet Author

Do you like the idea of becoming a booklet author but your worried that you don’t know enough or don’t have enough credibility to make it work?  This is an excuse which will hold you back and keep you from achieving your dreams.

Refuse To Let What You Don’t Have Stop You

Nobody is born knowing everything they need to know in order to succeed in life.  Whatever the chosen endeavor is, there is a learning curve one has to go through in order to become successful.

Everyone has a starting point. That point begins with the decision to move forward and do something, and most often when that decision is made there is little knowledge and a great deal of desire.  Desire trumps knowledge because it’s your desire that will drive you forward and cause you to seek the knowledge you lack.

You should never allow what you don’t have stop you from moving forward to achieving your goals.  The most important thing you can do is make the decision to take action. Once you do that, you can begin collecting thing other things you need.

The Journey Never Ends

Once you have made that all important decision to move forward, you may feel like there is an end goal – a time when you will know everything you need to in order to be successful.  But, the truth is, nobody ever knows everything there is know in order to guarantee success.

The journey never ends.  There is always room for more knowledge, always room for just one more booklet or product, always an opportunity to grow and expand your business.  To limit that is to stagnate, and to stagnate is death to your business.

Even if you could know everything there is to know, at some point the game will change. Look at what the internet has done to the newspaper and publishing industries.  Their past knowledge was of little use to them.  They had to change their game plan and learn news ways to play in order to stay in the game.  Those who did this well are still in business.  Those who tried to play by the old rules are long gone.

Success Is Not A Single Goal

Success is never guaranteed 100% no matter how much you know or how much you do.  But the more you learn and the harder you try, the more likely you are to succeed.

Success isn’t a single goal.  Rather, it is reaching one milestone after another as you continue to move forward. It is made of small achievements rather than one large one.  Most people fail to see this.  They look at where they want to be as one giant step rather than a bunch of little steps, and this causes them to fail before they start because it seems beyond their reach.  They don’t think they can get there.

The #1 key to succeeding as a booklet author is making the decision every single day to move forward. Don’t worry about what you don’t know.  That will come as you go, and if the game changes you’ll be ready to change along with it.

To your riches!

Why Some People Get All The Breaks

Why is it that some people seem to get all the breaks while others never seem to get a chance?  Is it because they were born under some lucky sign?  Is it because their parents somehow paved the way for them?  Or maybe it’s just that they’re smarter than everyone else.

Actually, it’s none of the above.  Luck, parentage and a high IQ have nothing to do with it.

Why Nothing Is Happening

I get this alot, and it’s happened again.  Someone wrote to me wanting to know why nothing is happening for them.  There’s a simple answer to that question.  Nothing is happening because they aren’t doing anything to make something happen.

I’ve said it so many times on this blog.  If you want to have something different, you need to do something different.  Wishing doesn’t make it so.

How To Make Something Happen

Ok, so you want something different than what you have, and you’re willing to do what it takes.  Good.  But, where do you start?  You start wherever you are.

If you’re somewhere past the beginning of your booklet adventure, having taken that huge first step and created a booklet, you take the next step.  Maybe that next step is production.  Or maybe it’s putting your booklet on the market.  Whatever it is, that’s what you must do next. And you must resolve to stop at nothing until it is done, and then you must move on to the next step.

This is how the game is played, and nobody is exempt.  There is no skipping ahead, no advancing to payday without having done something to get you there.  Donald Trump knows it.  Oprah Winfrey knows it.  And anyone who has ever had success in anything knows it.  Now, so do you.

Your Choices

Now you have two choices.  You can sit and whine about somebody else getting all the breaks, or you can go and make your own breaks.  Nobody is going to do this for you.  You’re going to have to do it for yourself.

Think about what it is you really want from your booklet publishing business, and then ask yourself how bad you want it.  Are you willing to do what it takes to get it?  Because once your mind is made up, the only person who can stop you is you.

Creating a booklet is easy, and it doesn’t take very long to do it.  Getting it on the market is also easy.  What’s hard and what takes time is making up your mind to do it.  Don’t waste a moment.  Your future is at stake.  Get out there and make your own breaks!

To your riches!

The Shocking Truth About The Only Thing Holding You Back In Your Booklet Adventure

You might have a number of reasons as to why you aren’t progressing right along in your booklet adventure, but the shocking truth about what’s really holding you back is that the only thing that’s holding you back….is you!

The Number One Reason You Aren’t Moving Forward Is…..

fear.  You don’t know what lies ahead, and that can be scary.  What if you create your booklet and nobody buys it?  What if nobody believes in you?  What if you fail?

On the other side, what if people do believe in you, and they buy your booklet and you succeed?  That can be a frightening thought as well, because now you carry a certain amount of responsibility and accountability.

Success feels great and alleviates the fear, but you won’t find that out until you get there.  Sometimes you just have to take a giant leap forward, move past the fear, and go for it. Once you do you’ll see there was nothing to fear and you’ll wonder why you didn’t take that leap sooner!

A Problem Easily Solved

Another reason you might be reluctant to move forward in your booklet adventure is a lack of  knowledge. Maybe you don’t know how to write and produce a booklet.  Or, maybe you don’t know how to get to the next step in your business.  Maybe you’re not even sure what the next step is.

This problem is easily solved with education. You can educate yourself where you’re lacking knowledge so that you can move forward.  There are many ways to do this – through books, the internet, personal coaching, and this blog to name a few.

It may seem easier to stay where you are than it is to learn and grow in knowledge so you can expand your business, but is that really what you want?  Of course it isn’t.

Be willing to to learn what you need to, and you’ll be able to sail right along to the riches!

Overwhelmed?  Relax!

Some would-be booklet authors seem to feel that they need to build an empire all at once, overnight.  They envision this enormous business filled with products going out to thousands or millions of customers.  Just the thought of this can be overwhelming.  After all, how do you go from nothing to an empire of that magnitude in a flash?

The answer is, you don’t – unless you buy an empire that is already built and then you’d better be prepared to run it properly.

The simple fact is, it takes time to build a large, thriving business and that isn’t for everyone.  You might be happy with a small scale business selling a handful of items to few regular customers.  That’s fine.  That’s the beauty of being in business for yourself. It’s YOUR business and you can build it and run it any way you want to.

Of course, you can build an empire, but it won’t happen overnight.  This, however, is a good thing.  You need time to adapt to the growth of your business as it expands. If it expands too quickly, you won’t be ready to handle it.

So breathe, relax and take it one step at a time. That’s the best way to build an empire!

YOU are in control of whether you move forward or not.  Stop holding yourself back.  Move forward in spite of the fear.  Learn what you need to know.  Take it one step at a time.  Success and riches are there for you.  You just need to decide you want them enough to reach out and grab them!

Go Big Or Go Home

Yesterday I saw a headline in a magazine that read, “Go Big or Go Home.”  Although I didn’t have time to read the article, that headline struck a chord with me because it’s true.  It’s true about everything you do in life – including booklets.

Raise Your Hand If You Want To Be A Janitor When You Grow Up

Remember when you were a kid and you told other kids about what you wanted to be when you grew up?  Maybe you wanted to be an astronaut, or a policeman, or a teacher.  Whatever it was, that profession seemed glorious to you in ways that other professions didn’t.  It inspired you and it was a big thing.

Few, if any, children have dreams about being janitors or debt collectors.  It isn’t that there is anything wrong with these kinds of jobs.  In fact, we need them in our society and culture in order to maintain it.  But, let’s face it.  Janitors and debt collectors don’t get much credit for the jobs they do, and in the eyes of the young it’s the astronauts and policemen who are the heroes.

Why Most People Tolerate Boring Jobs

When children grow up, they often forget the dreams of heroics they had in their younger days.  It’s time to face reality and get a “real” job.  Some will follow their dream and become the hero.  Most will not.  Sadly, the majority will settle for something far less exciting.  And sadder still is the fact that most of those who settle won’t budge even after they realize they aren’t happy or fulfilled in their current position.

Nobody makes the decision consciously to work at a boring job.  Nobody gets up in the morning and says, “I need to find a job.  I think I’ll try to find something that makes me miserable and that doesn’t inspire me or satisfy me in any way.”  No, what most people do is try to find something that will pay the bills. The fact that it makes them miserable is just something they tolerate in order to be able to do that.

Don’t Think Big, Do Big!

So, what does this have to do with booklets?  Think back to your own childhood for a moment and how excited you were about becoming whatever it was you wanted to be when you grew up.  Now, think about when you first heard about the possibility of becoming an author by writing a booklet.  Were you just as excited about becoming a booklet author as you were about becoming a policeman or teacher?  If you’re like most writers, your answer will be yes.

If you are excited about becoming or being a booklet author, then why would you want to settle for anything less than something big? Don’t you want to get the most from your booklet writing experience as you possibly can?  Of course you do!  So, don’t do it up small.  Do it up big!  Don’t do the least you can do, do the most!

The most successful people in business and in life are not the ones who think big, but the ones who DO big! That means taking some big action, and doing more than just the minimum to get by.

Big riches follow big actions, and if you’re not going to go big, then why bother creating a booklet at all?  Go big, or go home!

To your riches!

How To Build A Solid, Income Producing Booklet Business

Are you exactly where you want to be in your booklet adventure and in your life right now?  If you’re honest, you’ll say no.  Think back to five years in the past.  Where did you want to be today?  What things did you want to have accomplished?  What goals did you have back then that you haven’t realized today?  Why do you think you didn’t realize those goals?

Why You’re Not Living The Life You Dreamed Of Five Years Ago

The main reason your goals are not realized and you are not living the life today that you dreamed of five years ago is that your priorities are mixed up. From the moment you wake up in the morning, you set your priorities for the day.  If you have created a to-do list the night before, your priorities are set and you have a guideline to help you get things done.  If you didn’t, you’ll prioritize your day as things happen to you.

Prioritizing your goals means they are in the front of your mind and you are driven to achieve them because they are at the top of your list of things to do – whether you’ve actually written down your list or not.  It means getting these things done is highly important, and you’re going to do what it takes to make it happen. This is the attitude you must have in order to achieve anything in life, booklets included.

How To Make Sure That Five Years From Now You Are Living The Life You Want

So, how do you prioritize your goals and your day to make sure that five years from today you ARE living the life of your dreams?  It’s easy.  First, you must decide what is most important to you.  Decide what you really want. Do you want to be a booklet author exclusively, making a living from your knowledge and your writing?  You can do it.

If you’ve already made that decision and you’re living out your booklet adventure, then you need to decide where you want your adventure to take you.    What is your next step? Is it a second booklet?  Is it more products?  Is it a class or public speaking?  Once you know where you want to go and what your goal is, you can then make that goal a priority.

Do You Want To Write For Fun Or For Money?

Once you know what your goal is and you have your priorities straight, you need to take CONTINUAL action until your goal is achieved. This means you can’t start and then drop the ball.  If you do, then everything you did before you quit was just wasted time and you’ll be right back where you started.

Think of yourself like an athlete, but instead of practicing a sport you practice the craft of writing and running a business around your craft.  Athletes have to work hard every day to maintain their endurance and stamina in order to be able to compete and have a real chance to win.  They give themselves every advantage – from staying in shape, to eating right, to practicing their sport every day.  They keep their eye on the prize because they’ve made it a priority.

In contrast, think of someone who is not an athlete but enjoys playing a little basketball now and then – maybe with the kids once in a while.  While this person enjoys basketball, it’s not a priority for them.  Rather, it’s a way to enjoy time with the kids – which is really their priority.  This person doesn’t care about winning a game or being the best player, and that’s fine because making a living from basketball is not their goal.

Which athlete would you rather be like?  If you want to be like the first one, you need to make your booklet business a major priority and take it seriously. If you want to be like the second one, then your writing will be something you do for fun and not for money.

Decide what you want.  Prioritize.  Take constant and continual action until you achieve your goal.  This is how you build a solid, income producing booklet business – and achieve anything else in life.

To your riches!

Why You Don’t Have To Write More Than One Title To Make Real Money

Are you overwhelmed at the thought of having a large booklet business that sells a variety of products?  Would you like to keep things simple, perhaps just selling one booklet or a few related titles?  If so you may be wondering if you’ll be able to make any real money by offering fewer choices to your market.  The answer is an unequivocal and resounding YES!  You can!

If Coca Cola Can Do It, So Can You

There’s a new shop at my local mall that just opened up for the holiday season.  They sell puzzles, and puzzles only. They don’t have a large selection. They have different categories, such as animals and nature, space, holidays, and children’s puzzles, and each category has maybe 10 different choices – some more, some less.

This little shop that isn’t really all that impressive is doing quite well.  Every time I walk by they have shoppers browsing and buying.

Another company that is famous for selling only one product is Coca Cola.  They started with one simple product in 1886, and it wasn’t until 70 years later – in the 1950′s – that they began to introduce other products into the marketplace.

Although today they sell a variety of sodas and other products, they will always be known for their original coke.  This is a company that took one product and RAN with it. If you would like to know more about how Coca Cola got it’s start and spun a single product into a household name, you can read about it at http://heritage.coca-cola.com

You can choose to sell booklets, and booklets only, like the puzzle company mentioned above.  You might offer a few different titles in different categories, or you might offer related titles only in a single genre.

Or, you might decide to be like Coca Cola and offer only one, good title to your market.  If Coca Cola can do it, why not you?

Better To Do One Thing Well

Have you ever heard the phrase, “it’s better to do one thing well than be a Jack of all trades?”  If you create only one booklet, or you create a series of related titles in just one category or genre, you will become well known as an expert in the area of your subject.

For example, if you love dogs – and particularly pomeranians – you might write a booklet about the love and care of pomeranians.  Your booklet might include how to choose a pomeranian puppy, training and grooming tips, feeding, and general care.

Later, should you decide to expand a little, you might write another booklet about how to train your pomperanian as a show dog.  Although your new title deals with a different subject – showing your dog – it is still tied into your general theme of pomeranians.  This makes YOU the pomeranian expert!

You Have To Cut Your Teeth Somewhere

Even if you decide later to expand your business into as many different genres and titles as you possibly can, or you decide to offer other products to your market aside from booklets, it’s good to begin with one product.

Coca Cola wasn’t built in a day. They started with one product and stuck to it for 70 years.  They were a household name before they expanded.

Nobody starts at the top with a large business that sells hundreds of products unless you buy an existing business.  Even then you have to cut your teeth somewhere or you wouldn’t be prepared to run that big business.

You can create a single product and reap riches from it forever.  And should you choose to expand down the road, the opportunity will always be there.

To Your Riches!
